Corruption crime rates in Indonesia continue to escalate each year despite stern governmment measures, an official says.

"Data shows that corruption cases handled by public prosecutors office, police and KPK have increased in the last five years," assistant attorney general on special crime acts Marwan Effendy said, as quoted by Antara news wire on Monday.

Marwan said that in 2004 the public prosecutors office handled 617 corruption cases, police 157 cases and KPK two cases.

In 2005, the public prosecutors office handled 729 cases, police 187 and KPK 17 cases.

In 2006, the public prosecutors office handled 807 cases, police 279 cases and KPK 23 cases.

In 2007, the rate slightly declined with the public prosecutors office handling 712 cases and the police 200 cases. But the KPK handled a total of 27 cases.

"Until July 2008, however, the public prosecutors office has handled 561 cases, police 90 cases and KPK 20 cases," he said.

Marwan said public prosecutors had demanded the death sentence for people convicted of corruption like Dicky Iskandardinata.

In addition, prosecutors had also demanded life sentences for others convicted of corruption such as Bambang Sutrisno and Andiran Kiki Ariawan in the absentia court over the Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) and PT Bank Surya debt case, causing Rp 1.5 trillion in losses to the state.
